    Description

Here is a really hard to find locality small cabinet sized end slab specimen of rich native silver growing on and through a cream-white-pink-gray calcite matrix with rich silver veining growing completely through and showing on both sides of the piece.  The silver is mostly seen in dendritic blooms inside safflorite and cobaltite coatings with a few veinlets and lightnings bolts of silver thrown in for good measure and it is both very aesthetic and quite rich in native silver, and it comes from an old collection from the 1980s!   All the bright silver-white stuff you see in the photos is silver, and it usually forms the centers of cobaltite and safflorite blooms.
This piece comes from the Colonial Mine, Coleman Township, Cobalt Area, Cobalt-Gowganda Region, Timiskaming District, Ontario, Canada.
This mine was first discovered in 1904 and first worked in 1906.  Most of the mining occurred between 1906 and 1926 with sporadic efforts for continued mining through about 1954 when the mine closed for good.  Over its history, t
otal production was approx. 1.2 million ounces of silver and 4,000 pounds of Cobalt.  The mine is currently a tourist attraction.  We have sold hundreds of pounds of Cobalt silver specimens over the years, but this is the first time we have had anything from this old silver mine.
It measures 6.1 x 4.6 x 1.5 cm in size (about 2.3 x 1.8 x 5/8 inches), weighs 2.5 ounces, and comes professionally labeled and ready for immediate display!  This is a slab that was cut from a much larger piece so one large side has been cut but not polished and the other side and thin edges are natural.  The uncut side is just a large mass of the metallic minerals silver and cobaltite.  This specimen is great just as it is, but it could also be cut into two thinner slabs and made into cabochons and used in lapidary work for jewelry or art projects if desired.
The Cobalt Silver Rush started in 1903 when huge veins of silver were discovered by workers on the T&NO railroad near Mile Post 103.
By 1908 the mines around Cobalt were producing 9% of the world's silver, and in 1911 alone produced more than 31 million ounces of silver.  However, the good ore ran out fairly rapidly, and most of the mines were closed by 1940.   Several of these mines were reopened for short periods of time during World War II and in the 1950's, and a few attempts were made to reopen mines in the 1980s, most of which were unsuccessful.  Over the history of mining in the Cobalt area, more than 460 million ounces of silver came out of these mines
